Kitchen fires have come the forefront in recent years with ever more high profile incidents and higher claim costs.

You need to be aware:
The Oct 2005 Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order came into effect in April 2006.

This places the onus on building operators to appoint a responsible person for fire safety and this responsible person needs to have a fire risk assessment carried out.

Such a risk assessment should include any kitchen extract system within or passing through a building and should identify fire risks and ways of removing or reducing the risks. Failure to carry out a risk assessment and precautionary actions identified as risk reduction measures could, in the event of injury or death could lead to an HSE prosecution of the individual(s) and company responsible.

KLS are able ensure that kitchen grease extract systems (canopies, filters, ductwork, risers and fans) in kitchens, restaurants, hotels, pubs, canteens, food production areas, hospitals, schools and the like are cleaned as required by your buildings insurance policies, in accordance with Fire Safety Regulations and Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) regulations.

Whats more did you know:
Did you know that most insurance companies stipulate that kitchen extraction systems be professionally degreased and thoroughly cleaned at least once a year for fire prevention.

Typical Insurance Policy clause: "The cooking equipment, hoods, canopies, grease traps and filters to be cleaned at intervals not exceeding 7 days"

In addition to the above, the entire internal length of the extraction ducting and the extraction motor and fan to be inspected regularly to check for any build up of grease or oil and deposits, and to be cleaned by a specialist contractor at intervals not exceeding 6 months.

The Insurance Industry is hardening its attitude on the issue, the association of British Insurers has recorded losses associated with dirty kitchen extract fires of approx £107 million pounds in 2004.
Its now becoming common practice for most insurance to downsize or even void claims relating to incidents involving extraction system and kitchen fires where regular professional cleaning cannot be proved.

Extraction Canopy Cleaning

Extraction Canopy CleaningEven the most efficient extraction filters cannot remove all traces of grease and dirt from the air. Over a short period time a layer of grease and dirt is deposited on the surfaces of ventilation hoods, ducting, filters and fans. This build up not only causes an environmental health hazard by providing a breeding ground for bacteria and foul odours, it also reduces the efficiency of the system and greatly reduces reliability, it also posses a major fire risk.

As this grease accumulates it only requires heat, a spark or even spontaneous combustion to start a terrifying and catastrophic sequence of events.
The grease within the system acts as a fuse allowing the fire to spread throughout the entire length of the system, with temperatures soon exceeding 1200C, the steel ductwork soon collapses allowing flames and smoke to escape and spread to surrounding ceilings and walls with the end result often being total devastation of the premises.

It is essential to carry out regular inspections and cleaning of your extraction system, failure to do so could lead to a breach of Environmental Health Regulations and possible problems with Insurance cover and of course a much greater chance of a fire occurring.

KLS degrease and decarbonise all surfaces of the extraction canopy, ducting and fans. Removing the coating of grease and carbon that builds up and accumulates through cooking, If an extraction system is cleaned regular and grease build up minimised then the possibility of fires is greatly reduced.


Fish & Chip Range Duct Cleaning

With the high grease content and immense heat generated by Fish & Chip Frying Ranges they represent probably the biggest risks of any fire occurring within a commercial Food related business.

KLS recommend a Steam Clean is carried out at the same time as your Annual Range Service, after a thorough clean it is often required to re-commission the gas burners to suit the new increased level of extraction. By having a range engineer onsite on the same day means this alteration can be undertaken quickly and easily with no disruption to your business.

Deep Kitchen CleansOur various levels of service are designed to maintain high standards of hygiene and to minimise fire risks and possible accidents and to increase efficiency and reliability of the equipment within your kitchen.

We are able to remove deposits of carbon, grease, grime and waste which can build up to cause a potential fire hazard.

Normal day to day cleaning often leaves deposits of debris in hard to reach areas, cracks and crevices, these soon accumulate to form a significant risk.

KLS undertake this type of cleaning and are able to dramatically restore the standard of most equipment.
These works can be arranged either as One Off visits prior to or following an Environmental Health visit or as Regular Service Visits.


Structural Cleaning

More and more employers are avoiding the possibility of employee injury law suits, by removing the need for employees to undertake potential risky cleaning tasks, i.e. the cleaning of ceilings, walls, high shelves etc.
A local high school recently agreed an out of court settlement of over £5000 when a chef slipped off a chair injuring their back whilst cleaning a high wall shelf.

KLS offer various levels of cleaning that are specifically designed to deal with the hard to reach more hazardous areas that require cleaning on a regular basis.

These cleaning tasks are normally scheduled at 3 monthly or 6 monthly intervals these time scales normally satisfy Environmental Health requirements .

KLS are able to wash floors, walls, ceilings, tiles. All deposits including grease and food deposits will be removed using suitable COSHH approved cleaning chemicals.


Insurance Certification

On completion of each project you will be provided with a certificate of cleaning and full project report detailing the cleaning process and outlining and problem areas or possible defects. The report may also include photographs, showing before and after pictures, these are particular useful and offer a true proof of cleaning should it ever be requested by your Insurer.


Annual Insurance Certificates for Mobile Catering

KLS are one of the few companies to carry the Gas Safe/Corgi CONGLP1CMC certificates that allows our engineers to carry out and issue annual service and inspection certificates on mobile LPG catering trailers.
Additionally our associated electrical engineers carry the required NIC/EIC qualifications required to issue electrical certificates on catering trailers.

These certificates are now a requirement for all mobile catering operators and commonly requested by most local authorities before granting operating licenses and are essential to comply with your Insurance.
